Do you know your HIV Status?

I just read a post on this site where the blogger is trying to comfort someone who has just found out they are HIV positive. Its extremely sadening and while there weren't a lot of details on the article, I must admit that I wouldn't know how to react. What do you say?

A few years ago I had to do a HIV test as part of a mortgage application process cause "I've lived in a country which is high risk for HIV" ie Nigeria! (WTF?) They kept me waiting for the results for 2 weeks and once I received the negative results I swore off unprotected sex for life (well almost).

I also just read here about how Washington DC has plans to do voluntary HIV tests on all its population aged between 14 and 84. They reckon about 43,000 Americans became infected with HIV in 2004, and over 1 million Americans carry the virus of which number a quarter are unaware of their status and are thus liable to be spreading it.

I've had the discussion about HIV status with a couple of friends and they said like Mario Winans they don't wanna know. Do you want to know? (Your HIV Status that is).

Ofcourse I wanna know! I go for tests like once a year. The whole thing - from Chlamydia to HIV. And each time I am scared oh.. lol!!

Sometimes we think if we don't think about something, it'll eventually disappear...

I know people who don't wanna know! I know anyway....it's a very sensitive thing....my grandma counsels and has an organisation for hiv positive ppl in nigeria, there was a guy who got married to his wife knowing he had hiv but asked the doctors not to tell her and he didnt plan on telling her....that's just downright mean but then again nigeria is still quite backward in terms of literacy

I used to think that because I was not engaging in unprotected sex I was free from risk. However, I was forced to open my eyes to the whole issue when I went backpacking to West Africa as of course there are medical issues there of receiving injections and indeed blood tests for common things such as malaria where you can be infected through needles not previously sterilised. As such, I was encouraged by my UK doctor to carry my own sterilised needles and learn how to inject myself lest I be required to for any reason. It was a big eye opener for me. Thankfully Id didn't need to use them but I learnt alot.

With regards to mortgages I understand why they asked for you to be tested. When issuing any long term financial instrument or product they do a risk assessment to asceratin themselves that they will get the money back, after all mortgages are usually a large sum. Most of us are unaware that such profiles of ourselves are being built but every single question you answer be it your birth place, age, nationality etc is used by actuaries to asses your riskiness and therefore the interest rate that should be charged, the products you can be offered etc. Just think if you were lending me money and I was HIV positive would you not be worried that you'd not get your money back as I would die before the loan period was over? Much as we all hate it, nothing in this world is free.

I went for my HIV/AIDS test in December and it came out negative.
I was scared at first but I think I am more confident to be going for the test every 6months
